PLRCAP Spotlight Taking The Lead Workshops
WREP, a women led organization founded in 2002, and registered in the year 2003; provides assistance and works for the promotion of health, education and human rights for women and children especially the girl-child, with a focus on education. Their focus is to ensure that there is equal access to quality education, protection, WASH, nutrition and health before, during and after crisis.
Their team of 6 board members, 13 employees, 11 volunteers and an intern operate in North East and North Central regions of Nigeria in a humanitarian context in nexus with development interventions in the six (6) geo-political regions of Nigeria including the FCT; providing assistance to women and girls affected by conflict, including the reintegration of Chibok girls. Their target population cuts across 40% girls, 30% women, 20% men and boys and 10% people living with all forms of disabilities; with partnership which span across relevant MDAs, INGOs, NNGOs, CBOs, FBOs, private sectors and community stakeholders. They engage with others through networking and collaboration, using the Do-No-Harm, participatory, learning and inclusive approach to ensure no group is left behind.
They joined PLRCAP to strengthen their capacity for resource mobilization, strategic planning and for effective and efficient communication.
This August, WREP held their first self-assessment workshop since 2019 using the TTL methodology. In attendance at the workshop were a representation of every level of staff (5 board members, 3 management staff and 6 lower staff). It was a 2-day workshop, with members of the PLRCAP team facilitating the sessions. Participants felt that it was a success, as they jointly explored organizational strengths and weaknesses and developed a detailed action plan.
As a result of the workshop, they unanimously agreed to seek partnership with humanitarian and emergency-focused agencies, as they realized that a key gap area was emergency preparedness. They also decided to have better-structured plans for engaging beneficiaries, as well as a more collaborative and advocacy-driven approach in their work.
Leaving the meeting, they resolved to:
- Develop an emergency management response plan
- Re-train staff on humanitarian principles and code of conduct
- Develop policies on gender and external communication
- Step up advocacy approach on what they are doing in the sphere of humanitarian assistance.
