With the high rate of maternal and child mortality in Bwari and environs, Women’s Right to Education Programme (WREP) sort to provide the residents of Bwari and environs with better health care services especially for the women and children; we found out that the reason for the high rate of maternal and child mortality is as a result of obsolete or non-existing medical equipment. In our bid to contribute to the achievement of reducing child mortality and improving maternal death (goal 4 and goal 5 of MDG) through customized community interventions that will reduce the incidence of maternal and child mortality in Bwari and environs; we solicited for grant from the Embassy of Japan with a proposal entitled “Provision of Medical Equipment for Bwari General Hospital”.

WREP led a team from the Embassy of Japan Abuja on a monitoring visit to Bwari General Hospital on the 18th June, 2015.

The Medical Director, represented by Dr. Nnabuchi Chidi (Consultant and HOD Medicine), was on hand to welcome the team. He stated that although Bwari General Hospital is small structurally, its services which are near-free compared to other General Hospitals in the country are top class, which is why it attracts may patients with some coming from as far as Niger, Kaduna and Plateau States.

The departments visited by the team includes; Delivery, Maternity, Post Natal, Antenatal and Children Wards. Others are the Medical Records, Accident and Emergency, Physiotherapy and Laboratory Units. The General Out Patient Department (GOPD) and the power source house (generator) were not left out of the monitoring visit.
